Yang Jie, the Chinese director of the popular TV series Journey to the West, passed away on Saturday at age 88, actor Chi Zhongrui confirmed on Monday.Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. The TV adaptation of the classic, produced by China Central Television (CCTV), was first broadcast in the Chinese mainland in 1986. It soon became immensely popular and is widely considered in China as the most classic adaptation of the novel. Chi, the actor who played the monk Xuanzang in the series, announced Yang's death to Chinese media on Monday.Other actors from the series paid tribute to the director on social media. "I heard from Mr Chi that Yang Jie, one of the first generation TV directors in our country, has passed away. I feel extremely sad. This is a loss for the entire Chinese TV industry," actor Zhang Jinlai, or Liuxiaolingtong, as he is more commonly known, posted on Sina Weibo on Monday.
