Classic novel Journey to the West has been adapted so many times and in so many ways in China and overseas that people barely bat an eye when yet another adaptation of the story is announced. However, just why this Chinese literature classic and its lead character the Monkey King have been able to fascinate people for so long still remains a mystery.Probably China's best-known novel around the world, the story follows the monk Xuanzang as he makes his way to India to bring back Buddhist scriptures accompanied by his three cursed disciples Sun Wukong (Monkey King), Zhu Bajie (Pig) and Sha Wujing (Friar Sand). According to a Tuesday report from the Beijing Evening News, the story has been adapted more than 100 times worldwide since 1926. "The characters, especially the Monkey King, reflect who we are during different periods of our lives, from happy childhood to tiring middle-age, and thereby appeals to us all," Jin Hezai, an online literature writer and the scriptwriter for the upcoming film Wukong, told the Global Times on Friday. Wukong, to be released in July, will be the eighth movie adaptation of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) novel made in the past three years and the 60th or so adaptation since the 1940s.Popular remakesOutside of China, other Asian countries and regions have also been enthusiastic about adapting Journey, with Japan alone producing at least four TV series about the story from 1952 to 2007.Asian adaptations aside, the latest US series Into the Badlands, which features a powerful fighter escorting a boy hero on an odyssey to fulfill a sacred mission, is also "loosely based on" the ancient Chinese story, according to a Bustle report quoting the show's producers. Moreover, a new Sino-US coproduction, Journey to the West, is also on the way.Audiences seem more than happy to welcome these numerous adaptations. Over the past two years, a majority of Journey remakes released in the mainland, such as Stephen Chow's big-budget blockbuster Journey to the West: Demons Fight Back (2017), have chosen to debut during the Chinese New Year holidays, arguably the country's most fiercely competitive period for films. In most cases this was a wise movie as a majority of these films saw commercial, if not critical, success during the period. Demons Fight Back alone raked in more than 1.6 billion yuan ($234 million).Humanized heroBut where did people's fascination for this centuries-old pilgrimage story come from? And why have Journey remakes performed more successfully globally than adaptations of other classic works of Chinese literature? First of all, it may be that the story's mythical setting full of monsters and gods provides abundant material for studios to make fantasy films that are easily understood by both Eastern and Western audiences. Additionally, the characters and core spirit of the story also are a factor. While the US has dozens of superhero characters, for many Chinese, the sole and only local superhero is the Monkey King."Before I started writing Legend of Wukong as a 20-something college graduate, I had long been fascinated by the Monkey King," Jin told the Global Times, referring to the 2000 blockbuster online novel that made him a big name. He pointed out that many people, including he himself, once dreamed about becoming a versatile superhero like the Monkey King, who "stood against the rules set by the celestial and underworld gods" when young, but after maturing becomes willing to accept the fate forced onto him by the Buddha. He theorizes that this is why his book, which featured a modern illustration of a defiant Monkey King, appealed so much to young generations."I was very much attracted to Wukong's rebellious spirit and his hatred toward the rules of a rigid world," Lin Jianyu, an 18-year-old university freshman, told the Global Times. He said that Jin's version of the Monkey King reminded him of his own life and appealed to him more than the original story. While some regard Journey as a success story or a fantasy about fighting monsters, for Jin, the story is a pure tragedy - the quartet of characters go on "a journey given by the Buddha" and, after all the hardships they have to face, are stripped of their humanity when they become gods who lead lives with no feelings and in which nothing interesting happens. Jin was also the co-writer for the novelization of Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons along with Chow. Commenting on his work with Chow, Jin said that Chow tends to humanize the four characters in his works, which is probably why his recent Journey adaptations and his 1994 A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella, in which Chow played the Monkey King, were so popular among Chinese and even foreign audiences."Chow told me he wanted to depict the quartet as ordinary human beings who experience frustration and pain," said Jin. "While the Monkey King in Chow's movies is depicted as a grumpy disciple who always defies his master, but in Wukong, I focused more on his attitude when facing tough choices in life," Jin said."The Monkey King to me is sort of a tragic hero who keeps trying even though he knows some things are insurmountable," he said.

‘Journey to the West’ director Yang Jie passes away at age 88

Yang Jie, the Chinese director of the popular TV series Journey to the West, passed away on Saturday at age 88, actor Chi Zhongrui confirmed on Monday.Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. The TV adaptation of the classic, produced by China Central Television (CCTV), was first broadcast in the Chinese mainland in 1986. It soon became immensely popular and is widely considered in China as the most classic adaptation of the novel. Chi, the actor who played the monk Xuanzang in the series, announced Yang's death to Chinese media on Monday.Other actors from the series paid tribute to the director on social media. "I heard from Mr Chi that Yang Jie, one of the first generation TV directors in our country, has passed away. I feel extremely sad. This is a loss for the entire Chinese TV industry," actor Zhang Jinlai, or Liuxiaolingtong, as he is more commonly known, posted on Sina Weibo on Monday. Zhang played the role of the Monkey King in the 1986 TV series.Yang first came to work for CCTV in 1958, later kicked off her directorial career in 1980 with The Taoist in Mount Lao.

Although it has been 30 years since he first appeared on TV in Central China Television's (CCTV) Journey to the West, in the hearts and minds of many throughout China and Southeast Asia Zhang Jinlai, better known as Liuxiao Lintong, is still the one and only Monkey King. This year has been a good one for Zhang as the 57-year-old has published his first autobiography, in which he also pays tribute to Wu Cheng'en, the author of the literary classic."To know China, you should first get to know Journey to the West; to understand the Chinese people, you should first understand the Monkey King," Zhang wrote in his book Xingzhe (Traveler).Written during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Combining the historic pilgrimage of Tang Dynasty (618-907) monk Xuanzang with folk tales handed down over the centuries and the author's own imagination, the book is considered one of the earliest fantasy novels in China. "As an ancient Chinese folk tale, Journey to the West reflects the cultural essence of our nation, including yin and yang, Han and Tang culture, and also the imagination of our ancestors. We can see our ancestors' wisdom through Sun Wukong (the Monkey King)," Zhang told the Global Times in early September at a launch event for the China Post's new Xuanzang-themed postage stamps. Over the years, Zhang has continued to take advantage of his fame to promote this literary classic and other facets of Chinese culture, although there are those who say he is just trying to capitalize on the success of his glory days. "I worked on that show during a great time when the production crew were serious about producing a high quality program even though the technology wasn't that advanced," Zhang said."It was a time when people were willing to spend years focusing on one thing. For me, it's important to do one thing really brilliantly. If I can do that, just once is enough for a lifetime."Monkey businessIn a way, the Monkey King is in Zhang's blood. He was born to a traditional Chinese opera family that was well-known in local village opera circles in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. Playing the role of the Monkey King started with his great-grandfather, and from him was passed down from generation to generation. Originally Zhang was not chosen for this role, but instead took over the job from his older brother after the latter passed away. One of China's most enduring tales, Journey to the West also has a long history on TV. Back in 1981, CCTV first presented a Japanese version of the novel, which presented the story in a Japanese manga style and completely changed the book's main four characters and plots into something meant for children. "Chinese audiences couldn't accept it, and then the critics rose up and the show was canceled after only two episodes were broadcast, which was unprecedented for CCTV," Zhang wrote in his book. Soon after, CCTV decided to produce its own adaptation, which presented an opportunity for Zhang. For the role, Zhang relied heavily on elements of Monkey Opera, a branch of traditional Chinese opera, which earned him wide praise as many fans of the show said he looked like a real monkey.Zhang told the Global Times that this version of Journey to the West led to audiences all over the country to start paying attention to the family business. This, he said, was one of his biggest successes - connecting modern audiences with traditional Monkey Opera. "Many people tell me that young people don't and never will like traditional Chinese opera. I disagree. Whenever I meet young people, I ask them if they love traditional Chinese opera and they shake their heads. But when I ask them if they liked my performance as the Monkey King, they nod," Zhang said."Then I tell them that my performance as the Monkey King was traditional opera, and ask them the first question again, to which they nod their heads."Heading West"Why doesn't the Monkey King have parents?""So the Monkey King can fly and Xuanzang can't. What if the Monkey King put Xuanzang on his back? Could they fly?" These are just some of the numerous questions that a US screenwriter asked Zhang in preparation for a new movie adaptation of Journey to the West.During the Beijing International Film Festival last year, Zhang announced that he was collaborating with Paramount to produce a 3D version of Journey to the West which would make use of foreign directors and screenwriters to create a more-cinematic story that would still retain the core cultural concepts and characters from the novel.Zhang has high hopes for this collaboration, as he sees it as a way to bring traditional Chinese culture to mainstream audiences overseas. "Just because a Chinese star or work wins an international prize, doesn't mean that Chinese film has gone international. We have to produce works that people will remember years from now; Titanic for example," Zhang said.According to Zhang, production on the movie hasn't moved forward because his US partners still haven't fully grasped the novel. Meanwhile, he has also been negotiating with them not to make the movie so commercialized that it loses its original charm."They want to add commercial elements like a love interest, violence and making one of the main characters female. I said 'absolutely not,'" Zhang explained. Although the process has slowed production, Zhang has refused suggestions they use a Chinese screenwriter, since he wants to create something that can be truly accepted by Western audiences. "When it comes to the overall structure and narrative style, we have to respect and adapt to the way Western audiences appreciate things."

Dreamy musical romance La La Land, set in modern-day Los Angeles, topped nominations for the Golden Globes on Monday, as Hollywood's awards seasons revs up in the march to the Oscars.Damien Chazelle's tribute to the Golden Age of American musicals picked up seven nods, including for best musical/comedy film and for its two stars, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.Dramas Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Florence Foster Jenkins and Lion followed with six, five, four and four nominations, respectively. The announcements will give the nominees a welcome boost going into the race for February's Oscars, with the influential Screen Actors Guild nominations to come later this week.La La Land will face competition from 20th Century Women, Deadpool, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Sing Street in the race for best comedy or musical film.Vying for best motion picture drama are Mel Gibson's war movie Hacksaw Ridge, heist thriller Hell or High Water, family dramas Lion and Manchester by the Sea and coming-of-age story Moonlight.Experts have Chazelle's musical in the lead in several races for the Globes, which will take place on January 8 with comedian Jimmy Fallon as host. "Normally the Globe voters like to spread the wealth among a lot of different films, but I could honestly see it winning the film award and [awards] for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone," Chris Beachum, managing director of the Gold Derby awards predictions website, told AFP. "It's got a very good shot at 'directing' and maybe the score or song categories - it could do really well."Front-runnerKenneth Lonergan's unflinching Manchester by the Sea, which earned Casey Affleck a nomination for best actor in a drama film, has been monopolizing attention on the drama side of the Globes competition.Another front-runner is Barry Jenkins's Moonlight, with the director and cast members Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali all garnering nominations.Lion, about a young man from India adopted by an Australian family who searches for his long-lost blood relatives using Google Earth, is also considered a favorite for the Oscars.Garth Davis's drama received Globes nods for best drama motion picture, and in the supporting acting categories for Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman.Stars took to social media to voice their shock, delight or gratitude as they woke up to the announcements, presented in the pre-dawn hours in California."Thank you, Golden Globes! As we speak, the entire Deadpool team is engaged in a grotesque, early morning tickle-fight," the superhero comedy's star Ryan Reynolds, who was nominated for best comedy/musical actor, joked on Twitter.Lily Collins, nominated for her performance in Warren Beatty's Rules Don't Apply, posted a picture to Instagram of her clasping her hand to her mouth in elation."The moment your mom captures you being nominated for your first Golden Globe. Priceless. I still can't breathe. Beyond honored, thankful, and proud. This can't be real!" she said.Hamilton superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda, who penned "How Far I'll Go" for Disney animation Moana, celebrated his best original song nomination with a tweet which said simply: "Bit of a day, bit of a day, bit of a day!"SurprisesNotable by its absence was Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation, which was seen as firm awards material until news emerged over the summer of the director's acquittal over rape allegations in 1999 by a woman who ended up committing suicide. Other surprise omissions were Denzel Washington, nominated on seven previous occasions, who looked like a good bet to earn his first directing nod for Fences, and Silence director Martin Scorsese, who won in 2012 for Hugo.Washington nevertheless earned a nomination for his acting in Fences, as did co-star Viola Davis.Maren Ade's Toni Erdmann, a German comedy about a troubled father-daughter relationship, added a Golden Globe nomination in the foreign language category after sweeping the board at the European film awards on Saturday. It will vie for the prize with three French films - Divines, Elle and The Salesman, a joint French-Iranian production - as well as Chile's Neruda.Among the television nominations, FX true crime anthology The People vs O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story led with five nominations.AMC crime drama The Night Manager was close behind with four nominations, while Black-ish, The Crown, The Night Of, This is Us and Westworld grabbed three each.HBO comfortably led the television nominations with 14.Although more high-profile than the SAGs, the Golden Globes are seen as less of an indicator of Oscars glory, as a relatively small group of non-US journalists - the Hollywood Foreign Press Association - chooses the winners, rather than the industry itself.Newspaper headline: ’Tis the season... for awards

‘Injured’ panda ruffles feathers online

‘Injured’ panda ruffles feathers online

A zoo in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province denied on Wednesday that an extremely underweight panda had been mistreated, saying that the weight loss was caused by a tooth problem. The apparently malnourished panda had been spotted by a Weibo user, "tanxiongmaodeguzheng," at the Xi'an Qinling Wildlife Park in Shaanxi, who got suspicious and posted photos online on Monday. The poor panda can be seen in the photos walking around its particular space with its ribs clearly visible, and appearing sluggish and in low spirits. This soon had viewers raising questions about its health, with one Weibo user remarking, "This panda is totally different from what I imagine one looks like. Isn't it supposed to be round and cute?"However, a staff member of the zoo told the Global Times that the panda was just suffering from pulpitis (tooth inflammation or decay) because it was old. He simply noted, "It can't eat much these days," and denied that the panda's weight loss was caused by caretakers. The person in charge of the animal said, "It's true that the panda is underweight, but that's not because we were abusing it. We actually got doctors to take a look at it, and its health is gradually recovering."The poor animal is taking a rest until its teeth get better, and will not be available to visitors for the next few days, he added. Tooth infections are some of the main problems that bother pandas and, if they suffer from that particular disease, they find it difficult to eat, which could cause them to starve to death, one expert at a Chengdu Panda base who refused to give his name, told the Global Times. He noted that it is quite likely for a panda to lose weight rapidly if it suffers from pulpitis, which seriously affects their other living habits. This is not the first time that the health of a panda has aroused public concerns. The China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Centre has published an article describing how one panda, Didi, at a park in Central China's Henan Province, was seen by netizens to be bleeding around the mouth, so it was turned over to the research center, which announced that the animal's bleeding was the result of gum disease. In a related incident in October 2016, authorities at the Lanzhou Zoo in Northwest China's Gansu Province denied that they were mistreating one of their pandas, Shulan, after photos of the wounded animal went viral on the Internet and sparked a public uproar and accusations of abuse.Nonetheless, Zhao Huawen, founder of the Eudemonia Bank, a Chengdu organization dedicated to protecting the pandas' habitat, told the Global Times that some zoos are irresponsible with their pandas and may even mistreat them."The best way to prevent the mistreatment of pandas is for the authorities to keep a close watch on zoos, and to revoke the license of any zoo that is disqualified," said Zhao, adding that in spite of their popularity and the government's protection policies, some of the captured pandas do live in poor conditions. The State Forestry Administration issued a regulation in 2011 stating that zoos should give health examinations for pandas annually and should report to the animal authorities if a panda is sick or injured.
